🇺🇸 English Translation|Singaporean Banks Host Wealth Management Bootcamps for China’s Second-Generation Wealthy—Asia’s Rising Wealth Hub

Singapore’s financial industry is drawing global attention, especially among ultra-wealthy families in Asia, primarily from China. Faced with political uncertainties and tightening regulations at home, these families are shifting their assets to Singapore, now seen as a global “safe haven.”

Amid this shift, major Singaporean banks have launched “wealth management bootcamps” targeting the next generation of high-net-worth individuals—commonly referred to as the “rich kids” or heirs of elite families.

United Overseas Bank (UOB), a major Singaporean bank, held a 5-day special program in Hong Kong. Participants included the children of the wealthiest 10%, with exclusive networking events featuring Porsche dealerships and renowned companies. The curriculum also included panel discussions hosted by the Singapore Management University.

Other leading banks such as DBS and OCBC have implemented similar programs. These focus on practical topics such as asset management, business succession, wealth protection, and international finance. Participants typically range from their 20s to 40s, with about 50 people per session.

McKinsey estimates that between 2023 and 2030, intergenerational wealth transfers in the Asia-Pacific region will total $5.8 trillion (approx. ¥840 trillion). Chinese high-net-worth individuals are at the center of this shift. In response to the government’s “common prosperity” policy, many have moved their assets overseas—Singapore alone received $400 billion in transferred assets by the end of 2023.

Singapore is witnessing a surge in Single Family Offices (SFOs), private wealth management entities for ultra-rich families. As of the end of 2024, over 2,000 SFOs had been established—an increase of more than 600 from the previous year.

In response, banks like the Bank of Singapore have strengthened their client service teams, expanding their Hong Kong wealth managers by 30% and creating dedicated teams for ultra-wealthy clients from China, Macau, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

  1. Generational Shifts Will Trigger Greater Asset Mobility
The new generations are looking globally—and Japanese real estate is a top candidate.
  2. Japan’s Real Estate Seen as a Stable Safe Asset
From a Chinese investor’s perspective, Japanese property offers stable currency exposure, fair pricing, and favorable taxation.
  3. Alignment with Global Education and Diversified Investment Goals
Wealthy heirs trained in global finance are keen to invest in physical assets like Japanese condominiums and hotels.

The influx of Chinese capital through Singapore is expected to accelerate.
Now is the time for Japan’s real estate industry to embrace “family capitalism,” expanding into multilingual, internationally-focused service models that cater to these evolving needs.
